The PSI Audio A17-M Studio Red is a Swiss-made, fully analogue two-way active nearfield monitor for compact production rooms, mixing, editing and critical listening. Its CPR phase-response technology, AOI driver control, individually calibrated components and powerful Class A/B amplification deliver precise imaging, controlled bass and dependable mix translation without DSP in the audio path.
The PSI Audio A17-M Studio Red is a high-resolution active nearfield monitor for engineers who need trustworthy monitoring in smaller control rooms, desktop production spaces, edit suites and professional project studios. Handmade and individually calibrated in Switzerland, it is designed to reveal tonal balance, transient detail, bass structure and stereo placement with the kind of stability that makes mixing decisions easier to trust outside the studio.
The A17-M uses a fully analogue signal path. PSI Audio deliberately avoids DSP in the monitor’s crossover and amplification path, relying instead on analogue electronics, precisely matched drivers and tightly controlled phase integration. The result is an immediate, low-latency listening experience that avoids depending on digital correction while retaining the benefits of advanced active-monitor engineering.
Its two-way driver system combines a 130 mm diaphragm woofer in a 180 mm frame with a 27 mm diaphragm tweeter in a 90 mm frame. The woofer is supported by a low-profile bass-reflex port, while the tweeter has been designed and manufactured to PSI Audio’s requirements. The compact cabinet measures 200 × 320 × 230 mm, making it practical for real nearfield placement, but the system’s extension and output capability go well beyond what its size suggests.recordingmag+2
The A17-M reaches from 44 Hz to 23 kHz at −6 dB and is specified at ±2.2 dB over its controlled operating range. This provides enough low-end information to make informed decisions about kick drum, bass guitar, synth fundamentals and low-frequency build-up in a properly treated small or medium-sized room. For work that requires deeper extension, greater low-frequency headroom or surround/immersive bass management, the A17-M can be integrated with the PSI Audio A125-M subwoofer.
PSI Audio’s CPR technology—Compensated Phase Response—is central to the monitor’s performance. By controlling phase behaviour through the crossover area, CPR is intended to support sharp stereo imaging, clear transients and stable depth information. This is particularly helpful when positioning vocals, assessing reverb and delay tails, deciding on panning moves or checking whether a mix remains coherent in mono.
The AOI system, Active Output Impedance, is PSI Audio’s analogue driver-control technology. It is designed to reduce unwanted resonance and improve control of driver behaviour, contributing to the A17-M’s tight low-frequency response and well-defined transients. Together with the system’s analogue crossover and dedicated amplification, this helps the monitor remain composed on complex programme material rather than sounding loose or exaggerated in the upper bass.
The A17-M provides dedicated Class A/B amplifier channels rated at 170 W for the woofer and 45 W for the tweeter in PSI’s current technical data. PSI specifies 102 dB continuous SPL, 105 dB short-term SPL and 115 dB peak SPL at one metre. Its 75° horizontal by 40° vertical dispersion helps focus energy toward the listening position while reducing some of the unwanted interaction with desk surfaces, ceiling and side walls.
Rear-panel controls allow input sensitivity and 100 Hz bass roll-off to be adjusted, helping the monitor adapt to placement on stands, meter bridges or desks. The balanced XLR input supports professional interfaces, monitor controllers and analogue chains. A17-M Studio Red is therefore more than a compact desktop speaker: it is a serious reference monitor for detailed work where imaging, timing, midrange honesty and controlled bass matter more than exaggerated size or hyped frequency response.
The A17-M belongs first in Studio Monitors. Its compact active design and neutral, accurate presentation can also appeal to audiophile listeners who value a professionally voiced active stereo system, but its primary product positioning should remain nearfield production, mixing, mastering support and critical monitoring.
