Phono stages amplify the very low-level signal from an MM or MC cartridge and apply RIAA equalisation before it reaches a line-level input on an amplifier. The right phono stage depends primarily on the cartridge, required gain, loading impedance or capacitance, and its integration into the complete analogue playback chain. For discerning vinyl systems, precise adjustment options and a low-noise signal path are key considerations.
