The Locomotive Audio Model 86B-1 is a high-voltage, two-slot 500 Series tube microphone preamp, instrument DI and line-level colour processor. With a 6BR7 input tube, 12AY7 output tube, transformer-coupled signal path, up to 75 dB of gain and independent Gain/Level controls, it moves naturally from clear, dimensional valve amplification to assertive harmonic drive and vintage saturation.

The Locomotive Audio Model 86B-1 brings the flexible, American-style tube-preamp character of the 86B-2 into a 500 Series format. It is a single-channel processor, but uses two adjacent 500 Series slots to accommodate a genuine high-voltage tube circuit rather than a low-voltage “starved plate” design. Its internal tube stages operate at approximately 275 V, allowing the preamp to deliver the headroom, dynamic response, harmonic complexity and drive behaviour associated with classic 1950s valve recording equipment.

The 86B-1 is built around a 6BR7 input tube and a 12AY7 output tube. These tube stages work with premium MuMetal-shielded input transformers and nickel-and-steel output transformers to provide up to 75 dB of microphone gain. The result is a preamp that can remain open, detailed and naturally warm at conservative settings, but becomes increasingly textured, harmonically dense and saturated as it is driven harder. It is especially useful when a modern recording chain feels technically correct but lacks depth, energy or analogue personality.

The relationship between the two main controls is central to the 86B-1 workflow. The Gain control determines how hard the microphone, line or DI signal drives the tubes and transformers. The Level control compensates at the output. For clean amplification, use moderate Gain and set the desired level with the output control. For stronger valve colour, increase Gain and reduce Level to retain sensible converter input level. This makes it possible to dial in anything from gentle harmonic enhancement and fuller midrange to more pronounced tube compression, grit and vintage-style saturation.

The module accepts microphone, line-level and instrument sources. A dedicated front-panel Hi-Z DI input supports direct guitar, bass, synths, drum machines and other high-impedance signals. In Line mode, the 86B-1 becomes a compact analogue re-amp and colour processor: route DAW stems, virtual instruments, mixes or hardware sources from your converters into the module, set the desired degree of tube drive, then return the transformer-coupled output to the recording chain. This provides a valuable option for adding analogue weight and depth after tracking rather than committing to saturation during recording.

Two microphone impedance settings let you tune the interaction between the preamp and a connected microphone. The lower setting can increase loading and alter the response of certain dynamic and ribbon microphones, while the higher setting provides a more conventional interaction. This is not a substitute for microphone choice, but it gives engineers an additional tonal variable before gain staging and tube drive.

Practical tracking controls include +48 V phantom power, a switchable 20 dB pad, polarity inversion and an 85 Hz high-pass filter. Use phantom power for condenser microphones and compatible active DI sources. Engage the pad when close-miking loud instruments, using high-output condensers or driving the front end deliberately. The high-pass filter helps remove low-frequency rumble, handling noise, stand vibration and excessive proximity effect before those frequencies consume headroom in later processors.

A three-colour output LED provides immediate level feedback: green indicates a healthy output level, yellow signals proximity to peak level and red shows a high-output condition. This makes it easier to drive the internal stages creatively while keeping the signal level appropriate for the next device in the chain. The module is specified for up to +24 dBu maximum output, enabling confident integration with professional converters, compressors, EQs and analogue mix systems.

With a high-voltage tube architecture, substantial gain, transformer-coupled I/O, DI and line-processing versatility, the 86B-1 is not merely a “tube-flavoured” 500 Series preamp. It is a compact professional channel front end for vocals, bass, guitars, acoustic instruments, drums, synthesizers and DAW stems. Use one for a distinctive mono recording chain or install multiple units to create a matched, modular tube-preamp bank within a high-current 500 Series chassis.
