Barefoot Sound MiniMain12 (Pair) – Active 4-Way Studio Monitors

The Barefoot Sound MiniMain12 pair combines four-way active monitoring, integrated Dual-Force subwoofers and DSP-controlled processing in a complete stereo system.

Each monitor contains seven drivers: two 12-inch subwoofers, two 7-inch woofers, two 2.5-inch midrange drivers and a 1-inch ring-radiator tweeter. Dedicated Hypex amplification powers the four frequency sections, while analogue and AES3 inputs support different studio monitoring chains.

With bass extension to 20 Hz and MEME monitor emulation, the MiniMain12 provides both a full-range reference and alternative listening perspectives from the same pair of speakers.

Four-way architecture with seven drivers per monitor

The MiniMain12 divides the audio spectrum across dedicated subwoofer, woofer, midrange and tweeter sections.

The two 12-inch drivers handle deep bass. Two 7-inch woofers cover the next frequency region, followed by a pair of 2.5-inch aluminium-cone midrange drivers and a 1-inch ring-radiator tweeter.

DSP crossovers operate at 80 Hz, 800 Hz and 4 kHz. The drivers are housed in sealed acoustic compartments, allowing the system to combine extended bass reproduction with dedicated midrange and high-frequency sections.

Across the supplied stereo pair, there are fourteen drivers in total.

Integrated Dual-Force subwoofers

Each cabinet contains two opposing 12-inch aluminium-cone subwoofers.

Their acoustic output combines while the opposing mechanical reaction forces reduce the movement transferred to the enclosure. The linked driver structures also contribute to internal cabinet bracing.

This arrangement addresses cabinet vibration at its source. It does not cancel room modes or remove the need for suitable positioning and acoustic treatment.

Bass extension to 20 Hz

Barefoot specifies a low-frequency −3 dB point at 20 Hz and a response of 28 Hz–40 kHz within ±1 dB.

The integrated subwoofer section allows the MiniMain12 to reproduce deep-bass material without requiring a separate subwoofer simply to reach that range. Whether additional low-frequency equipment is useful depends on the monitoring format, room and required output.

A rear-panel control adjusts the subwoofer level by −2 dB, 0 dB or +2 dB. This provides a limited tonal adjustment rather than automatic room correction.

Dedicated Hypex amplification

Each monitor contains separate Hypex amplifier channels for the subwoofer, woofer, midrange and tweeter sections.

The published ratings are 1,200 W for the subwoofers and 250 W each for the woofer, midrange and tweeter sections. Barefoot markets this as approximately 2,000 W of amplifier power per monitor.

No external speaker power amplifier is required. These amplifier ratings should not be confused with continuous acoustic output or mains power consumption.

Analogue and AES3 digital inputs

The MiniMain12 accepts balanced analogue line-level audio and AES3 digital audio through separate XLR inputs.

With an analogue source, the signal is converted internally to 24-bit/192 kHz digital audio for DSP processing. With AES3, a rear-panel switch selects the left or right channel carried in the digital stream.

For digital operation, provide suitable upstream volume control. The rear-panel level adjustment is intended for system setup, not as a convenient everyday stereo master-volume control.

The USB connector is reserved for factory adjustment and calibration. It is not a USB audio input.

MEME: additional references without additional speakers

MEME, or Multi-Emphasis Monitor Emulation, offers four voicings: Flat, Hi-Fi, Old School and Cube.

Flat is the primary reference setting. The alternative voices let you reassess a mix through different tonal and dynamic characteristics, helping you examine vocal placement, midrange balance and the audibility of important elements.

Barefoot’s emulation goes beyond a simple frequency-response adjustment, but it does not reproduce every acoustic property of a separate loudspeaker. MEME is a translation-checking tool, not a substitute for all external listening checks.

Plan the installation as a complete system

The MiniMain12 is designed for nearfield, midfield and far-field applications. The manual recommends a minimum listening distance of 1 metre and symmetrical positioning of the stereo pair.

Each monitor weighs approximately 54 kg without handles. Use supports suitable for the actual load and dimensions, and plan handling before delivery.

Barefoot recommends at least 127 mm of clearance from large obstructions for cooling and does not recommend soffit mounting. Check the mains-voltage selector before connecting power and follow the installation instructions.

A full-range reference for critical studio work

The MiniMain12 pair suits studios that need a full-range stereo monitoring system with integrated deep-bass reproduction, dedicated four-way processing and both analogue and digital connectivity.

It offers a main-monitor approach without requiring separate subwoofer cabinets. Correct room integration remains essential: extended bandwidth and powerful amplification are most useful when placement, level alignment and acoustics support reliable decisions.
