BAE Audio 1073 Module
The BAE 1073 Module is a single‑channel mic/line preamp and EQ built in the original Neve 10‑series format, designed as a plug‑in replacement for vintage 80‑series console modules. It recreates the classic 1073 input channel down to the smallest details, using St Ives (Carnhill) transformers, Elma switches, Canford wire and hand‑wired Class A circuitry. The result is the thick, authoritative British console tone that defined countless records: a harmonically rich low end, solid, musical midrange and a smooth, airy top that already sounds like a finished mix.
Offering 0 to 80 dB of Class A, transformer‑balanced gain with a wide 10 Hz to -3 dB at 55 kHz frequency response and an equivalent input noise around -110 dBu, the 1073 Module comfortably handles everything from low‑output ribbons to hot line sources. The mic input impedance is switchable between approximately 1200 and 300 ohms, allowing you either to keep things clean and open or to deliberately load a microphone for extra colour and punch. The line input presents a 10 kΩ impedance and runs through the same transformer path, while the DI input offers around 150 kΩ impedance for guitars, basses and synths when you want instant “console DI” tone.
The equaliser section is classic 1073: a high‑frequency shelf with ±16 dB fixed at 12 kHz; a low shelf with ±16 dB at 35 Hz, 60 Hz, 110 Hz and 220 Hz; and a powerful mid band with ±18 dB of peaking gain at 0.36, 0.7, 1.6, 3.2, 4.8 and 7.2 kHz with a fixed, musical Q. A steep 18 dB‑per‑octave high‑pass filter with selectable cutoffs at 50, 80, 160 and 300 Hz lets you clean up rumble and low‑end build‑up before compression. Combined, these bands make it easy to add weight without mud, bring vocals forward, give guitars bite or add sheen to overheads in a way that always feels musical rather than surgical.
Because the BAE 1073 Module is built to original mechanical and electrical specs, it can be dropped into compatible Neve 10‑series racks or powered frames as a direct replacement for vintage modules. Whether you are restoring an 80‑series console, building a custom sidecar or using a modern 10‑series rack, this module gives you genuine 1073 sound and workflow rather than a loose approximation – a true studio standard for tracking, mixing and high‑end outboard chains.
