BAE Audio 1073D Module for 500 Series

The BAE 1073D (Deluxe) is essentially a full‑blown 1073 module adapted for the 500 Series format, with a few smart upgrades that make it even more versatile in modern studios. Built using the exact same transformers, cards, switches and wiring as BAE’s 10‑series and 19" rack units, the 1073D is a Class A mic/line preamp, EQ and DI that delivers unmistakable 1073‑style British console tone in a triple‑wide 500 Series module – complete with extra high‑frequency options and a dedicated direct input.

At its core, the 1073D offers up to 70 dB of all‑Class A gain with a transformer‑balanced signal path based around Carnhill (St. Ives) input and output transformers. Mic gain ranges from about -20 to -70 dB in 5 dB steps, while the line input offers -20 to +10 dB, making it just as comfortable tracking low‑output ribbon mics as it is adding colour to hot line‑level sources. The mic input impedance can be switched between roughly 1200 and 300 ohms, letting you either keep microphones clean and open or deliberately load them for more character. A high‑impedance DI on the front panel brings guitars, basses and synths straight into the preamp’s sweet spot, with the same fat, harmonically rich low end, resonant highs and focused mids that made the original famous.

The EQ section follows the 1073 layout but with a twist: the high‑frequency shelf isn’t fixed at just 12 kHz but offers ±16 dB at 10 kHz, 12 kHz or 16 kHz, so you can choose between classic air, more presence or a gentler sheen. The low shelf provides ±16 dB at 35 Hz, 60 Hz, 110 Hz and 220 Hz, while the mid band offers ±18 dB of peaking gain at 0.36, 0.7, 1.6, 3.2, 4.8 and 7.2 kHz with a fixed musical Q. A steep 18 dB‑per‑octave high‑pass filter with cutoffs at 50, 80, 160 and 300 Hz lets you clean up rumble and low‑end mud before compression. An output attenuator allows you to drive the input and EQ stages hard for saturation and then trim the level on the way out to your converters or tape.

Because the 1073D occupies three adjacent 500 Series slots, there is enough real estate to house full‑size transformers and uncompromised Class A circuitry rather than miniaturised versions.

Combined with line‑level XLR inputs, high‑impedance DI, polarity reverse, 48 V phantom power and 300‑ohm mic impedance switching, this makes the 1073D Deluxe a true console‑grade channel strip for any API‑style rack – equally suited to tracking lead vocals, guitars and drums or sculpting stems and buses in a hybrid mix environment.
