The compression section offers two distinct operating modes. Low Comp provides the smoother, more restrained response expected from a classic Vari-Mu design, making it useful for mix-bus glue, mastering applications, vocals, acoustic instruments and sources that benefit from gentle, musical control. High Comp delivers a more assertive compression curve for stronger dynamic shaping, parallel-style processing, drums, room microphones, aggressive vocal treatment and creative sound design.
Attack and release are selected with stepped controls, allowing repeatable settings and fast workflow recall. Four attack options and three release options provide practical control over how quickly Dictator reacts to transients and how naturally it returns to unity gain. The stepped input gain and output level controls support reliable gain staging and easier recall in professional studio environments.
A key strength of Dictator is its modern sidechain section. The switchable high-pass filter offers five cutoff points—22 Hz, 40 Hz, 80 Hz, 130 Hz and 200 Hz—allowing low-frequency energy to be reduced in the detector path. This helps prevent kick drums, bass instruments or sub-heavy programme material from over-triggering the compressor, making it easier to preserve punch, low-end clarity and stereo stability on buses and full mixes.
Dictator’s Mu Follower circuit links the two channels across the complete transition curve for stable, accurate stereo gain reduction. This is particularly valuable on mix-bus, mastering and stereo-source material, where inconsistent channel behaviour can pull the stereo image or make the centre image unstable.
