At its core is an advanced analogue VCA compressor with selectable Peak or RMS detection. Peak detection responds quickly to transients and is well suited to controlling drums, sharp programme peaks and modern mix-bus material. RMS detection responds more to average programme energy, enabling smoother, more transparent level control for mastering, stereo-bus processing and sources where musical movement is more important than fast transient restraint.
 
The Mastering Compressor provides three compression styles: BM, SG and DX. BM is Bettermaker’s own flexible compressor mode, designed for clean and versatile mastering-grade control. SG delivers a more assertive, punch-focused response inspired by classic VCA bus compression, while DX provides a different timing and tonal behaviour for engineers who want a more characterful dynamic response. The three modes make the unit useful across a wide range of sources and production styles without forcing one fixed compression character.
 
Stereo, dual-mono and Mid/Side modes offer extensive control over stereo material. Stereo mode preserves linked left/right behaviour for coherent mix-bus and mastering compression. Dual-mono mode enables independent compression on each channel. In Mid/Side mode, engineers can treat the centre and side information separately—useful for controlling low-end stability, vocal density, centre-image punch or the dynamics of stereo ambience. Mid and Side Solo functions, together with sidechain preview, support critical monitoring before committing to processing decisions.
A highly configurable sidechain section lets you shape what the compressor reacts to. The unit includes high-pass and low-pass filtering plus a fully adjustable parametric sidechain filter. This helps prevent low-frequency material from triggering excessive compression, emphasise selected frequency ranges in the detector path, or fine-tune how the compressor responds to bass, kick drum, vocals and dense programme material.
 
The Dry/Wet Mix control enables parallel compression inside the hardware. Blend compressed and uncompressed signal for additional density, sustain and loudness while keeping transients and natural movement intact. A Range control limits the maximum amount of gain reduction, making it easier to maintain subtle, controlled mastering compression and to prevent excessive dynamic flattening.
 
Two independent Colour circuits add optional harmonic character. The THD circuit introduces gentle analogue-style harmonic enhancement, while the Zener circuit offers a more aggressive colour option. Used subtly, they can add density, perceived detail and energy to a mix; driven harder, they can provide a more obvious tone-shaping effect. Engineers can therefore use the Mastering Compressor as a transparent control processor, a mix-bus glue compressor or a source of intentional analogue character.
 
The front-panel 5-inch capacitive touchscreen provides direct visual feedback for gain reduction, threshold and input/output levels. The supplied plug-in adds USB hardware control, full DAW automation, instant recall, preset management and A/B comparison.
