The PSI Audio AVAA C20 Black is a fully analogue active bass trap designed to control low-frequency room modes in professional studios, mastering rooms, control rooms and high-end listening environments. Rather than changing the signal or applying digital room correction, the AVAA C20 works directly in the room to reduce excess low-frequency energy and shorten the decay of standing waves between 15 Hz and 150 Hz.

Low-frequency room modes are among the most difficult acoustic problems to solve. They can cause boomy bass, uneven low-frequency response, exaggerated notes, missing bass information and long decay times that obscure timing, pitch definition and mix balance. In professional monitoring environments, these effects make it harder to judge kick drums, bass instruments, sub-bass, compression and tonal balance. In high-end stereo rooms, they can reduce clarity, scale, imaging and the natural flow of music.

The AVAA C20, short for Active Velocity Acoustic Absorber, uses an active analogue system to absorb low-frequency acoustic energy. It is not a loudspeaker, does not reproduce music and does not operate as a conventional anti-noise or noise-cancelling system. During normal operation, it does not emit an audible signal. Instead, it actively controls acoustic behaviour at the unit’s membrane, allowing it to absorb energy from room modes in a compact enclosure.

The result is a practical alternative or complement to very large passive bass traps. PSI Audio states that the AVAA C20 can achieve bass absorption efficiency comparable with passive absorbers up to 25 times larger, while occupying far less usable room volume. This makes it particularly valuable in rooms where conventional low-frequency treatment would be impractical, visually intrusive or impossible to install at the scale normally required for effective deep-bass absorption.

The AVAA C20 is fully analogue and uses no DSP, no digital conversion and no latency. In most studio and listening-room environments it requires no individual calibration or complex measurement process. It is designed to be positioned near room boundaries and corners, where low-frequency pressure tends to build up. Placement should be considered as part of an overall room-acoustic strategy, particularly in rooms with significant modal issues or demanding monitoring requirements.

For the best results, the AVAA C20 should be used in a room where midrange and high-frequency behaviour has already been addressed through appropriate passive acoustic treatment. The AVAA is designed specifically for the deep-bass region, while conventional absorbers, panels and diffusers remain the appropriate tools for higher-frequency reflection, reverberation and diffusion control.

The PSI Audio AVAA C20 Black is equally relevant for recording spaces, mix rooms, mastering studios, broadcast rooms, edit suites and discerning high-end HiFi installations. One unit can improve a problematic space, while a pair is often a strong starting point for normal-sized stereo rooms. The required number and placement depend on room dimensions, loudspeaker placement, listening position, low-frequency modes and the desired degree of control.

Finished in Black, the AVAA C20 integrates discreetly into professional studio environments and modern listening rooms. It is a mobile, self-contained room-acoustic tool that can be relocated as a system or room evolves. For users seeking more truthful bass, shorter low-frequency decay, clearer monitoring and a more stable listening experience, the AVAA C20 offers a technically focused solution that treats the cause of low-frequency room problems rather than merely compensating for them at the signal level.
