The Locomotive Audio Model 40AM-1 is a two-slot 500 Series octal tube microphone preamp, DI and line-level colour processor inspired by 1940s American broadcast and recording amplifiers. Two 6SJ7 tubes, in-house-wound transformers, selectable input loading and a five-position Response control deliver bold low-mid weight, natural tube compression and highly adjustable vintage character.

The Locomotive Audio Model 40AM-1 is not intended to be a neutral utility preamp. It is a deliberate character tool for engineers who want the dense, authoritative and harmonically rich sound of early American tube equipment in a modern 500 Series rack. Its design draws inspiration from vintage RCA BA-11A and Gates SA-70 circuits, but adds flexible source matching, a front-panel DI, high-pass filtering and variable response shaping for contemporary recording and mix workflows.

The module uses two octal 6SJ7 tubes: one operates as a pentode, while the other is strapped as a triode. This architecture, paired with high-voltage operation and transformer-coupled I/O, produces up to 52 dB of gain with substantial low-mid body, natural transient rounding and pronounced harmonic structure. It is especially effective when a source needs scale, weight and a more tactile analogue presence rather than ultra-clean transparency.

MuMetal-shielded input transformers and nickel-and-steel output transformers are wound in-house by Locomotive Audio. These transformers are a central part of the 40AM-1 sound: they provide isolation, contribute to the unit’s large-format tonal impression and help the preamp remain robust when driven. The result can be smooth and controlled at moderate gain settings, then increasingly thick, compressed and colourful as the tube and transformer stages are pushed harder.

The Input rotary switch offers five source and transformer-loading configurations. It includes 500 Ω and 1.8 kΩ microphone options, Line Low and Line High settings, plus a 1.6 MΩ high-impedance DI position. The 500 Ω microphone setting and Line Low position each provide approximately 4.5 dB of additional gain, making them useful for lower-output microphones, ribbon microphones, sources that need more drive or deliberate saturation. The higher-impedance mic position offers a more open loading relationship for microphones that benefit from less loading.

A dedicated five-position Response control shapes the overall tonal balance and frequency behaviour. This is one of the 40AM-1’s defining features: it allows the engineer to tailor the vintage octal circuit to the source rather than forcing every signal through one fixed curve. It can be used to adjust bass weight, midrange focus and the perceived openness of the preamp, making the 40AM-1 more versatile than a simple vintage-colour device. The exact response changes depend on the selected position and operating level, so the control is best used by ear in the context of the recording.

The 40AM-1 includes practical session controls: switchable +48 V phantom power, a 20 dB pad, polarity inversion and an 85 Hz low-cut filter. Phantom power supports condenser microphones and active DI sources. The pad increases headroom when working with loud drums, close-miked amplifiers or high-output microphones. The low-cut filter reduces unwanted rumble, stand vibration and excessive proximity effect before the signal reaches a converter, compressor or equalizer.

The front-panel ¼-inch DI input supports direct guitar, bass, keyboards and other high-impedance instruments. With a 1.6 MΩ input impedance, it can preserve the natural behaviour of passive pickups while adding tube weight and controlled saturation. Use it for bass DI with more density and authority, guitar direct tones that need personality, or to send synthesizers and drum machines through a distinctly vintage American valve stage.

In Line mode, the 40AM-1 becomes a compact outboard colour processor. Route DAW stems, virtual instruments, mixes or hardware sources through its transformer and octal-tube stages, then use the Input, Response, Gain and Level controls to add analogue texture, low-mid impact and harmonic cohesion. This is useful when digitally generated or in-the-box material needs less precision and more scale, density and physicality.

The module occupies two adjacent 500 Series slots and requires a properly specified high-current rack. It is a strong choice for vocals, bass, guitars, drums, room microphones, acoustic instruments, keyboards and DAW stems—particularly wherever a recognisable vintage valve footprint is the goal.
