The Ex Machina Selene is a compact coaxial reference monitoring system designed for immersive audio, surround installations and nearfield stereo work. Supplied as a pair with the external EXCore amplifier and DSP module, it combines individually calibrated performance with a small footprint and flexible mounting options. Selene is particularly suited to environments where consistent imaging and practical installation matter as much as physical size.
 
Each monitor uses a custom 16 cm coaxial midrange and tweeter assembly based on Ex Machina’s third-generation driver architecture. Both frequency sections share an acoustic axis, supporting precise localisation and a consistent presentation around the listening position. Its 90° × 90° conical coverage makes Selene suitable for surround positions, immersive height channels, compact stereo setups and alternative nearfield monitoring.
 
Custom TPCD diaphragms, an FEA-optimised motor structure and a thin-lip underhung surround are developed to control resonance and maintain coherent driver behaviour. The coaxial design coordinates midrange and high-frequency dispersion, helping engineers assess dialogue, vocals, instrument placement, ambience and spatial effects without requiring a large loudspeaker enclosure.
 
The cabinet is built around an aluminium extrusion with 7 mm walls, 19 mm corner ribbing and integral cross-bracing. Solid 12 mm aluminium front and rear baffles are clamped onto the enclosure through gasketed interfaces. This rigid construction is designed to minimise cabinet vibration and unwanted contributions to the sound, providing a stable platform for critical listening in a compact enclosure.
 
Inside each Selene, a purpose-designed passive LR2 crossover divides the coaxial driver at 3 kHz. Its construction includes custom 14 AWG square-wire inductors, parallel Panasonic polypropylene capacitors and gyroid isolator mounts. Low series resistance helps preserve driver control, while closely matched filter sections allow the external DSP to correct the coaxial assembly consistently.
Amplification and processing are housed in the included EXCore module rather than inside the monitor cabinets. This 2RU half-rack unit combines Hypex NcoreX amplification with Ex Machina’s Peregrine processing architecture. An Analog Devices ADSP-21569 SHARC+ processor handles calibration and filtering, while an ESP32 co-processor supports WiFi control, remote updates and multi-system synchronisation.
 
Each Selene system is individually measured and calibrated. Ex Machina specifies a frequency response within ±1.5 dB from 80 Hz to 30 kHz, with an integral 80 Hz high-pass filter for surround integration. Maximum output is rated at 106 dB SPL at 1 kHz at one metre. Selene is therefore a compact reference for its intended operating range rather than a standalone deep-bass monitoring solution.
 
Balanced analogue XLR and AES/EBU digital inputs on EXCore accommodate professional monitoring chains, with Dante Pro S1 available as an optional configuration. WiFi control provides channel mute and solo, presets, delay compensation, equalisation, input sensitivity, boundary control and low-latency mode. Over-the-air firmware and calibration updates allow the system to receive further processing refinements.
 
For applications requiring greater low-frequency extension, optional Poseidon passive subwoofers integrate through EXCore’s available expansion channels. No additional amplifier or separate DSP unit is required for that compatible expansion. Poseidon is sold separately and is not included in this Selene monitor-pair listing.
 
Integral mounting points support 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm MIS-D VESA patterns using M4 fasteners, providing practical options for installed surround and height channels. Each monitor measures 165 × 165 × 160 mm and weighs 6.4 kg, so mounting hardware and desktop supports must be appropriately rated.
