The Cranborne Audio Carnaby HE2 is an advanced two-channel analogue equalizer built around Cranborne’s HarmonicEQ® technology. While conventional equalizers adjust the amplitude of selected frequencies, Carnaby HE2 shapes both level and harmonic content. Its three bands generate frequency-dependent saturation as boost and cut controls are adjusted, allowing engineers to add density, weight, presence, excitement and tonal complexity with the intuitive workflow of an equalizer.

Each channel offers three bands: a low shelving band from 20 Hz to 420 Hz, a fixed-Q mid peaking band from 200 Hz to 6.2 kHz, and a high shelving band from 5 kHz to 25 kHz. The low band uses a more forceful clipping architecture that can add powerful low-frequency density and subharmonic-style richness. The mid band is designed for character, definition and forwardness in the presence range, while the high band uses a smoother saturation response to add air, sheen and detailed top-end energy. Carnaby HE2 works in three main operating modes. Stereo mode links both channels for coherent mix-bus, mastering and stereo-source processing. Dual-Mono mode allows separate settings for the two analogue channels, making the unit suitable for two independent sources or differently balanced left/right material. Mid/Side mode encodes a stereo signal into Mid and Side components before processing, enabling independent harmonic EQ treatment of centre information and stereo width. This is particularly useful for mastering, controlling mono-compatible low end, adding air to the sides, or introducing focus and density to the centre without over-processing the stereo image.

Unlike two Carnaby 500 modules in a rack, Carnaby HE2 adds extensive mastering and workflow features. Each of the three bands can be bypassed independently, allowing exact comparison of individual tonal moves. Dedicated low-cut and high-cut filters are available on each channel, so unwanted subsonic energy and excessive ultrasonic or top-end content can be managed before the main HarmonicEQ stages. The variable low-cut operates from 18 Hz to 180 Hz, while the high-cut spans 8 kHz to 40 kHz. Both use progressive-slope filter behaviour designed for practical mixing and mastering control rather than abrupt, clinical filtering.

The input and output controls each offer ±20 dB of adjustment. This makes Carnaby HE2 unusually flexible: use conservative levels for cleaner tonal shaping, or drive the input to increase the intensity of the harmonic process. The output trim then allows accurate gain matching for reliable A/B comparison. Per-band saturation indication is provided through the colour-coded LED-ring interface, helping you see both frequency selection and the intensity of each HarmonicEQ band in real time.

Each channel includes a bypassable balanced quarter-inch TRS insert. This allows an external processor—such as a compressor, limiter, saturator or other outboard device—to be inserted before the HarmonicEQ stage. For example, a compressor can control drum-bus dynamics before Carnaby HE2 adds low-end drive, midrange punch and high-frequency energy. The insert architecture makes the unit especially valuable in a mastering chain or analogue mix-bus setup where routing flexibility matters.
