The Barefoot Sound Footprint03 brings three-way active monitoring to a compact studio format. A dedicated 3.5-inch midrange driver, 6.5-inch woofer and 1-inch ring-radiator tweeter each have their own Class-D amplifier, providing 260 watts of amplifier power per monitor.
Designed for recording, production and mixing, the Footprint03 combines a ported enclosure with DSP processing, SPOC conversion technology and Barefoot’s MEME monitor emulation. It offers several ways to assess a mix without changing your listening position or adding another physical pair of reference speakers.
A dedicated driver for the midrange
The Footprint03 separates bass, midrange and treble duties across three drivers. Its 3.5-inch aluminium-cone midrange handles the region where much of the information in voices, guitars, keyboards and other instruments is concentrated.
A front-facing 6.5-inch aluminium-cone woofer covers the low frequencies, while a 1-inch fabric ring-radiator tweeter handles the top end.
This three-way architecture gives each driver a defined operating range rather than asking one bass/mid driver to reproduce both low frequencies and the full vocal region.
Three amplifiers, 260 watts per monitor
The woofer and midrange each receive a dedicated 100-watt amplifier. A separate 60-watt amplifier powers the tweeter.
These are integrated Class-D amplifier stages, so no external speaker power amplifier is required. Connect the monitor to a suitable line-level source, such as an audio interface or monitor controller.
The 260-watt figure describes the combined amplifier power inside one monitor. It should not be confused with continuous acoustic output or mains power consumption.
Ported bass extension in a compact enclosure
Unlike the sealed, opposing-woofer arrangement of larger Footprint models, the Footprint03 uses one forward-facing woofer and a side-firing bass-reflex port.
Barefoot specifies a frequency response of 45 Hz–40 kHz within ±3 dB and 50 Hz–22 kHz within ±1 dB. This provides useful bass coverage for a compact nearfield system, while deeper sub-bass monitoring may call for a suitable subwoofer.
Keep the port unobstructed and evaluate placement in the actual room. Speaker positioning and room acoustics still influence the low-frequency response at the listening position.
DSP and SPOC signal processing
The Footprint03 accepts an analogue signal and converts it internally for DSP processing at 96 kHz. Its processing platform manages crossover and response shaping before the signal reaches the dedicated amplification stages.
SPOC stands for Spectrally Optimized Conversion. Barefoot uses an analogue crossover section before conversion to optimise how different frequency regions feed the converter.
The manufacturer specifies approximately 3 ms of processing latency. This is low, but it is not zero; consider it as part of the complete monitoring path when recording or integrating additional equipment.
MEME: alternative references from the same monitors
MEME stands for Multi-Emphasis Monitor Emulation. It provides alternative monitor voicings intended to help you examine how a mix translates to different playback characteristics.
Use the reference voice for your main decisions, then switch to another voicing to reassess vocal balance, midrange emphasis or the audibility of important elements.
MEME does not reproduce every property of another loudspeaker or remove the influence of your room. It is an additional perspective on the same mix, not automatic room correction.
Balanced analogue input and stepped level adjustment
A balanced XLR/TRS combination input connects each monitor to suitable professional line-level equipment. An eight-position level control provides defined sensitivity settings for system setup.
MEME control connections allow compatible monitors to receive the external voice-selection commands. These connections are for control, not additional audio inputs.
The USB connection is reserved for factory calibration, maintenance and firmware servicing. It is not a USB audio interface.
Build a practical monitoring system
The Footprint03 suits studios that want a compact three-way monitor with a dedicated midrange and built-in amplification. It can serve in stereo production setups or as part of a carefully planned multichannel system.
For a conventional stereo setup, use two monitors and a suitable volume-controlled source. If you add a subwoofer, plan the routing, crossover behaviour and level alignment for the complete system.
