Barefoot Sound LFE12 – Dual 12-Inch Active Studio Subwoofer

The Barefoot Sound LFE12 is an active studio subwoofer designed to extend Footprint monitoring systems into the lowest octaves. Two opposing 12-inch aluminium-cone woofers, 1,400 watts of amplification and a specified 17 Hz low-frequency extension provide a dedicated foundation for stereo, surround and immersive monitoring.

Separate BOOST and LFE inputs allow the LFE12 to support the low end of a stereo monitor system, reproduce a dedicated low-frequency effects channel, or perform both roles simultaneously.

Dual-Force technology: opposing drivers, reduced cabinet vibration

The LFE12 uses Barefoot Sound’s Dual-Force arrangement with two opposing 12-inch woofers and neodymium motors.

The drivers operate together acoustically while their opposing mechanical forces reduce the reaction transmitted to the enclosure. This force-cancelling arrangement is designed to minimise cabinet movement at the source rather than relying on cabinet mass alone.

Both drivers operate within one subwoofer enclosure. The LFE12 is therefore a single subwoofer with dual drivers, not two independently positionable subwoofers.

Low-frequency extension to 17 Hz

Barefoot specifies a frequency response of 17–120 Hz within ±3 dB, with the low-frequency −3 dB point at 17 Hz.

This extension helps reveal deep synthesiser content, sub-bass, low-frequency effects and other material that may fall below the useful range of the main monitors. The sealed cabinet uses acoustic damping and a rigid construction to control enclosure resonance.

Actual bass response at the listening position still depends on room acoustics, placement and system alignment. Extended bandwidth does not replace measurement or appropriate acoustic treatment.

BOOST inputs for stereo Footprint systems

Two BOOST input channels connect a stereo source to the subwoofer. Their corresponding full-bandwidth THRU outputs pass the signal onward to the main monitors.

Selectable 60 Hz and 80 Hz BOOST low-pass filters determine the subwoofer’s upper operating range in this mode. The THRU outputs remain full bandwidth; they should not be described as high-pass-filtered outputs that automatically remove bass from the monitors.

The LFE12 is designed to complement the Footprint01, Footprint02, Footprint03 and Footprint03C. Correct placement and level alignment are important when combining the subwoofer with the monitors’ existing low-frequency output.

A dedicated LFE input for immersive monitoring

A separate LFE input supports the low-frequency effects channel in appropriately configured 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Atmos and other multichannel systems.

Choose an 80 Hz or 120 Hz LFE low-pass filter setting to suit the monitoring configuration. The dedicated LFE path and stereo BOOST path can operate simultaneously.

An LFE channel is not the same as bass management. Routing bass from other channels, where required, must be handled by suitable upstream monitoring equipment or processing.

Stepped level control and selectable gain

A stepped rotary control adjusts input level from +3 dB to −9 dB. A separate switch selects 0 dB or +10 dB gain.

These controls support repeatable adjustment when integrating the LFE12 into a monitoring system. Select the gain setting according to the complete calibration and routing arrangement rather than assuming that +10 dB is correct for every installation.

Independent footswitch control

The LFE12 supports a dual-switch foot controller for independently muting the BOOST and LFE inputs.

This provides a convenient way to compare the stereo system with and without additional bass support, or to mute the dedicated effects channel without interrupting the other input path.

Muting BOOST removes the subwoofer’s contribution from that path; the full-bandwidth THRU connection is not a documented high-pass bypass system.

Designed for the Footprint family

The LFE12 combines balanced XLR connectivity with a sealed, acoustically damped enclosure finished in textured Footprint Gray polyester coating.

Its USB-C port is designated for factory calibration. It is not specified as a USB audio input, streaming connection or user-operated room-correction interface.

At approximately 30 kg, the LFE12 requires stable positioning and planned handling. Check access, floor space, mains capacity and the final installed clearance before delivery.

Is the Barefoot LFE12 right for your studio?

Choose the LFE12 if you need a purpose-built low-frequency extension for a Barefoot Footprint system or a dedicated LFE solution for a multichannel monitoring setup.

Its main advantage is the combination of two separate input roles, selectable filters, stepped level adjustment and Dual-Force driver construction in one active subwoofer.

For stereo, surround or immersive use, plan the routing and calibration as part of the complete monitoring system. Confirm the supplied foot-controller package and current availability with Falkenstein ProAudio before ordering.
