The Problem:
During vinyl playback, two different types of unwanted vibrations can distort the sound image:
Direct vibrations of the record itself, generated during playback by the needle's movement in the groove, travel back to the cartridge through mechanical reflection at the record edge with a time delay and corrupt the signal.

Indirect vibrations through airborne sound are created by sound waves hitting the record surface and exciting the needle into oscillations.

The cartridge picks up all these vibrations without distinguishing between the desired groove signals and the irritating parasitic vibrations. The superposition of these impulses causes the unpleasant dissonance.
