IGS Audio ZEN – Stereo Zener-Diode Compressor & Limiter

The IGS Audio ZEN brings Zener-diode compression to mastering, stereo-bus processing and tracking. Built around a transistor-based analogue circuit with transformer-balanced inputs and outputs, it combines input-dependent compression with stepped controls, stereo linking and a dedicated limiter mode.

It is a studio processor for engineers who want to shape dynamics through the behaviour of the circuit—not simply select a fixed ratio and reduce peaks.

Use the ZEN as a linked stereo processor for your mix or as two independent channels for separate sources. Adjustable attack and release, a sidechain high-pass filter and an AMP setting let you adapt its operation to different material, while hard-wire bypass makes it easy to compare the processed signal with the original.

Zener-diode compression with a distinct analogue approach

At the heart of the ZEN is an audio circuit built around 14 bipolar transistors per channel.

Eight hand-matched Zener diodes provide gain reduction within a feedback-based compression circuit. This is neither an optical compressor nor a valve-based Vari-Mu design: the ZEN offers a different approach to analogue dynamics processing, inspired by the British studio compressors associated with Abbey Road.

Rather than choosing a conventional fixed ratio, you work with compression behaviour that depends on the input setting.

Input and output level therefore become central parts of the workflow: the input helps determine how the circuit responds, while the output sets the level passed to the next device. Compressor and limiter modes provide two operating options within the same unit.

Shape the mix bus with adjustable timing

On a stereo mix, compression is about more than the amount of gain reduction.

The timing of that reduction affects how the processor follows transients, sustained elements and the movement of the arrangement.The ZEN provides stepped attack and release controls, with switchable ×4 timing options for longer responses. This gives you room to explore different compression envelopes rather than relying on a single fixed behaviour.

Engage stereo link when working with a stereo source, and use the separate left and right gain-reduction meters to monitor the processing.For mastering, the stepped controls also support repeatable adjustments. You can document a setting, return to it later and compare alternative approaches without relying solely on the position of a continuously variable knob.

Sidechain filtering without cutting bass from the audio

A strong kick drum or bass part can influence how a full-band compressor responds. The ZEN’s sidechain high-pass filter gives you control over that influence, with Off, 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 120 Hz and 240 Hz settings.The filter acts on the detector signal, not as a high-pass filter on the main audio path. It lets you reduce the contribution of low-frequency energy to the compression response while retaining the bass content in the programme signal. This makes it a useful adjustment when low-end events are driving more gain reduction than you want.

AMP mode: the active signal path without compression

The ZEN does not have to compress every signal that passes through it. Select AMP mode and the sidechain circuit is bypassed, allowing the unit to operate as a line amplifier with up to 36 dB of gain. IGS also refers to this setting as THD mode.AMP mode and hard-wire bypass serve different purposes. AMP keeps the active audio path in use without active compression; hard-wire bypass provides a separate way to take the processing circuitry out of the signal route. This distinction is useful when comparing the effect of the analogue path with the effect of gain reduction.

Stepped controls for recall and channel matching

Repeatability matters when analogue equipment becomes part of an ongoing mixing or mastering workflow. The ZEN uses stepped controls, with 24-position ELMA switches specified for input and output. These provide defined settings that are easier to note and restore between sessions.The two-channel layout supports both dual-mono processing and stereo-linked operation. Separate hard-wire bypass switches for the left and right channels provide additional control when checking or configuring each signal path.

Transformer-balanced connections for your studio

IGS Custom audio transformers are fitted to both the inputs and outputs. The ZEN provides two balanced female XLR inputs and two balanced male XLR outputs, making it suitable for connection to appropriate line-level converters, patchbays and analogue studio equipment.For a hybrid setup, the unit can be integrated into a hardware insert path using suitable converter outputs and inputs. Its stepped settings are particularly useful when the same hardware needs to serve several projects and be recalled between sessions

The ZEN occupies 3U in a standard 19-inch rack and uses an internal linear power supply with selectable 115/230 V AC operation.
