The Ex Machina Terra is a three-way active reference monitor designed for professional mixing, production and critical listening. Combining a third-generation coaxial midrange and tweeter with a dedicated PuriFi low-frequency driver, it delivers individually calibrated performance in a rigid aluminium enclosure. This listing includes two Terra monitors for a complete stereo monitoring setup.
Terra’s coaxial architecture places the midrange and high-frequency sections on a shared acoustic axis. Its 18 cm assembly uses custom TPCD diaphragms with an optimised fibre layup, a hybrid motor structure and waveguide geometry developed to coordinate the two frequency ranges. The thin-lip underhung surround is designed to minimise phase cancellation around the coaxial assembly, supporting precise imaging and a consistent presentation of vocals, instruments and spatial information.
A modified 18 cm PuriFi PTT6.5W96-08 woofer provides the low-frequency foundation. Ex Machina specifies a custom concave aluminium diaphragm to prioritise bending stiffness in the driver’s operating range. PuriFi’s hybrid motor and symmetrical suspension geometry are designed to maintain linear behaviour through the stroke, helping limit distortion and compression when reproducing bass transients and sustained low-frequency material.
The cabinet takes a different approach from conventional wooden monitor enclosures. Its monocoque aluminium shell is formed as a single extrusion, with 16 mm outer walls and integral 9 mm internal cross-braces. Durasein side panels provide a complementary damping structure, while silicone gaskets help control mechanical coupling between materials. The resulting assembly is engineered to minimise cabinet contributions to the sound rather than relying solely on enclosure mass.
Internal acoustic treatment is tailored to each driver chamber. The coaxial section uses precision-tuned microperforated metamaterial absorbers to address specific internal resonances, while the woofer chamber uses fibre filling. This targeted approach combines structural rigidity with acoustic damping, helping preserve the detail needed for decisions involving EQ, dynamics, transient shaping and reverberation.
Hypex NcoreX amplification is integrated into each monitor. Ex Machina’s third-generation Peregrine processing architecture uses an Analog Devices ADSP-21569 SHARC+ processor, with an ESP32 co-processor for WiFi control and updates. AKM AK5572EN analogue-to-digital and AK4493SEQ digital-to-analogue converters complete the conversion stage.
Each Terra is measured and calibrated individually before shipping. The drivers are linearised separately before zero-phase LR4 digital crossovers are applied at 200 Hz and 2 kHz. Rather than simply applying a correction to the combined output, this driver-level approach is designed to coordinate the frequency and phase behaviour of each section through the crossover regions.
The manufacturer specifies a frequency response within ±1.5 dB from 40 Hz to 30 kHz, with a −6 dB low-frequency extension at 30 Hz. Phase response is specified within ±15° from 30 Hz to 30 kHz across the linear passband. Maximum output at one metre is rated at 108 dB at 1 kHz and 100 dB at 50 Hz. A 90° × 90° conical coverage pattern provides a broad listening area for stereo production and collaborative work.
Balanced analogue XLR and AES/EBU digital inputs accommodate professional monitoring chains, with Dante Pro S1 available as an optional networking configuration. WiFi control provides access to functions including channel mute and solo, presets, delay compensation, equalisation, input sensitivity, boundary control and low-latency mode. Over-the-air firmware and calibration updates allow the processing platform to receive further refinements over time.
For projects requiring deeper bass extension or additional output, the optional Gravity subwoofers integrate with Terra through its rear-panel amplification and coordinated processing. Gravity is sold separately and is not included in this monitor-pair listing. This modular approach allows the system to expand as room size, production requirements or low-frequency monitoring demands change.
Terra is primarily a professional reference for mixing, production and detailed audio assessment, but its calibrated response and coaxial imaging also suit demanding audiophile stereo systems. At 21.8 kg per monitor, each enclosure requires appropriately rated support. Integral mounting points provide further installation options, while considered placement and room-acoustic treatment remain important to achieving reliable results.
