The Ex Machina Ganymede is an active three-way nearfield studio monitor designed for critical mixing, production and reference listening in smaller control rooms. It brings the core driver technology, sealed-cabinet construction and individually calibrated digital processing of Ex Machina’s larger monitors into a compact format. Supplied as one loudspeaker, Ganymede can be used to build a stereo pair, expand a surround system or provide consistent monitoring across an immersive installation.
At the centre of its design is a custom coaxial midrange and tweeter developed using SEAS engineering and Composite Sound Metamodal TX diaphragm technology. The 5.5-inch midrange and concentric 1-inch tweeter share an acoustic axis, supporting consistent imaging and a stable tonal balance around the listening position. The midrange diaphragm also acts as a waveguide for the tweeter, helping coordinate the dispersion of both drivers through their crossover region.
The Metamodal TX diaphragms use TeXtreme spread-tow carbon-fibre material with geometries developed to control stiffness, resonance and off-axis behaviour. Combined with the coaxial arrangement, this supports clear localisation and detailed reproduction of vocals, instruments and spatial information. For engineers working on EQ, compression, reverberation and stereo placement, Ganymede provides a reference designed to make small changes easier to assess.
A dedicated 7-inch custom SEAS aluminium low-frequency driver handles the bass below the 200 Hz crossover. Its long-throw suspension and optimised motor provide low-frequency capability within the compact enclosure. The sealed cabinet avoids bass-reflex port noise and port-related compression, while extensive internal bracing and 19 mm and 30 mm Valchromat panels help limit cabinet vibration.
Three dedicated Hypex Ncore amplifier channels supply 125 W RMS to the low-frequency driver, 75 W RMS to the midrange and 50 W RMS to the tweeter. The integrated active architecture eliminates the need for an external power amplifier and allows amplification, crossover behaviour and calibration to be developed as one complete system.
A fifth-generation SHARC+ AD21565 processor performs Ex Machina’s proprietary digital processing, supported by AKM AK5572EN analogue-to-digital and AK4493EQ digital-to-analogue converters. Each loudspeaker receives serial-number-specific measurement and calibration. The manufacturer specifies a frequency response within ±1 dB from 45 Hz to 30 kHz at the 30 cm calibration position, a −6 dB low-frequency cutoff at 38 Hz and phase response within ±15° from 30 Hz to 30 kHz.
Two processing modes accommodate different studio workflows. Full Calibration applies both magnitude and phase correction, with approximately 46 ms of system latency. Low Latency retains magnitude correction while removing phase calibration, reducing latency to approximately 3 ms for tracking and other time-sensitive applications. Both speakers in a stereo pair should use the same processing setting.
Rear-panel boundary controls provide full-space, half-space and quarter-space settings to help accommodate placement away from walls, near a rear wall or near a corner. The balanced analogue XLR input connects directly to a suitable audio interface, monitor controller or preamplifier. The USB connection is reserved for calibration and servicing and does not support USB audio.
Ganymede is designed primarily for professional nearfield monitoring, but its active architecture, coaxial imaging and calibrated response also make it suitable for demanding audiophile stereo listening. Its 90° conical coverage and coaxial geometry allow horizontal or vertical placement without changing the driver arrangement. For optimal performance, use appropriately rated stands or isolation supports and consider positioning as part of the room’s overall acoustic setup.
Ex Machina Soundworks designs, builds and calibrates its monitors in Brooklyn, New York. This listing includes one Ganymede monitor; two units are required for a stereo system.
