The Cranborne Audio Camden500 is a high-headroom, ultra-transparent 500 Series microphone preamp with Mic, Line and Hi-Z instrument inputs, up to 68 dB of gain, a high-pass filter and switchable Mojo analogue saturation. Use it as an exceptionally clean recording preamp—or dial in Thump or Cream for controllable harmonic weight, colour and character.
The Cranborne Audio Camden500 was designed to challenge the idea that a microphone preamp must choose between accuracy and character. Its core preamp path is transformerless, exceptionally clean, low-noise and highly linear. It delivers a wide bandwidth, very low distortion, low phase shift and substantial headroom—making it suitable for sources where natural transient response, depth and tonal neutrality matter.
At the same time, Camden500 includes Cranborne’s Mojo circuit: a dedicated analogue harmonic-saturation system that can be introduced only when needed. With Mojo bypassed, Camden500 functions as a transparent high-performance mic preamp. When Mojo is activated, it adds carefully controlled harmonic complexity rather than relying on transformer loading or uncontrolled overload. This lets engineers move from clean capture to obvious analogue character from the same 500 Series module.
The Mic input provides 8 dB to 68 dB of gain, making Camden500 suitable for high-output condenser microphones, dynamic microphones and low-output ribbons. Its low equivalent input noise supports quiet source recording, while up to +17.6 dBu of microphone-input headroom accommodates louder sources when gain is set conservatively. +48 V phantom power is available for condenser microphones and active DI sources.
The Line input offers 0 dB to 60 dB of gain and accepts up to +26.5 dBu. This makes the unit useful not only for microphones but also for re-amplifying line-level sources, adding clean gain to DAW outputs, processing synthesizers and drum machines, or driving the Mojo circuit as a dedicated analogue colour stage.
A front-panel Hi-Z input supports instruments directly. Its high impedance—1.5 MΩ in unbalanced operation and 3 MΩ in balanced operation—makes it appropriate for passive guitars, basses, piezo-equipped instruments and other high-impedance sources. Hi-Z gain ranges from 3 dB to 63 dB, with a maximum input level of +24 dBu. A phase-invert switch and 80 Hz high-pass filter provide practical recording control at the source.
The 80 Hz high-pass filter uses a 12 dB-per-octave slope. It helps reduce rumble, stand-borne vibration, air-conditioning noise, proximity-related low-frequency buildup and unnecessary sub-bass before recording. Applying this filtering at the preamp stage can also preserve downstream headroom for compressors, converters and mix processing.
Mojo offers two deliberately different harmonic styles. Thump is designed to add low-order harmonic density, apparent weight and punch while retaining controlled transients. It works well on kick drum, bass, drums, vocals, guitars, keyboards and full mixes. Cream produces a broader, more complex harmonic profile, adding richness, edge and saturation colour as the amount control is increased. The front-panel Mojo control has an off position, so there is no colour circuit in the path unless it is intentionally selected.
This combination makes Camden500 unusually versatile. It can capture a delicate vocal, acoustic guitar, piano or orchestral source with minimal coloration; supply quiet gain for a ribbon microphone; work as a clean DI for bass or guitar; or act as an analogue saturator for DAW stems and electronic instruments. Its 500 Series format makes it equally attractive in conventional lunchboxes or in integrated Cranborne systems such as the 500R8 and 500ADAT.
