The Cranborne Audio Camden EC1 is a compact single-channel studio front end with an ultra-transparent Mic/Line/Hi-Z preamp, variable Thump and Cream Mojo analogue saturation, a four-channel zero-latency line mixer and a reference-grade dual headphone amplifier. It is built for pristine recording, direct instrument capture, analogue character processing and professional headphone monitoring in a portable desktop or 1U rack-ready format.
The Cranborne Audio Camden EC1 brings the sound and flexibility of Cranborne’s award-winning Camden preamp platform into a compact standalone unit. It combines a premium microphone preamplifier, line amplifier, Hi-Z DI, analogue saturation processor, cue mixer and high-power headphone amplifier—making it an especially capable front-end upgrade for compact studios, mobile recording rigs, producers and musicians working with an existing interface.
The core preamp is transformerless, highly linear and designed for exceptionally low noise, low distortion, low phase shift and extended frequency response. With Mojo disengaged, EC1 functions as a precise, transparent recording preamp: ideal when the goal is to capture the actual character of a microphone, instrument or line-level source rather than impose the sound of a transformer or tube stage. Cranborne specifies equivalent input noise below −129.5 dBu with a 150 Ω source, frequency response within ±0.7 dB from below 1 Hz to above 1 MHz at 35 dB gain, and THD+N below 0.00025% at 1 kHz, 35 dB gain and +24 dBu output.
EC1 accepts microphones, line-level sources and instruments. The rear-panel XLR input handles microphones, while the front-panel Hi-Z input is suited to direct guitar, bass, piezo and other high-impedance instruments. Mic gain runs from 8 dB to 68 dB, line gain from 0 dB to 60 dB, and Hi-Z gain from 3 dB to 63 dB. This generous gain range, paired with low noise, makes the unit suitable for demanding dynamic and ribbon microphones as well as hot condenser and line sources. Switchable +48 V phantom power supports condenser microphones and compatible active DI sources.
The high-pass filter operates at 80 Hz with a 12 dB-per-octave slope, helping remove unwanted low-frequency rumble, stand vibration, air-conditioning noise and excessive proximity buildup before the signal reaches the converter. A polarity switch supports multi-microphone techniques, DI-and-amplifier blends and other sources where phase alignment needs attention.
Cranborne’s Mojo circuit gives the EC1 a second, deliberately characterful identity. Its variable amount control can be bypassed entirely for clean capture, used subtly to build density, or pushed for more obvious harmonic treatment. Thump adds transformer-style low-frequency reinforcement, punch and low-order harmonic weight—especially effective on bass, kick drum, drums, guitars and synths. Cream provides a tube-style, richer harmonic response with a more rounded transient presentation, making it useful for vocals, guitars, keyboards and DI bass. This allows the EC1 to serve as either a neutral preamp or an analogue tone processor for sources and DAW outputs.
The built-in four-channel line mixer supports zero-latency monitoring. It lets the direct preamp signal be blended with external playback and additional line sources for an artist headphone mix that does not depend on a low DAW buffer size. The two reference-quality headphone outputs share this flexible monitoring path and deliver up to 1.21 W per channel into 100 Ω headphones. Their low 0.33 Ω output impedance and flat 5 Hz–70 kHz response make them suited not only to tracking but also to critical monitoring with a broad range of headphones.
For practical studio integration, EC1 includes balanced XLR main output, impedance-balanced ¼-inch outputs with a 10 dB pad, a Link output for splitting direct instruments to an amplifier or pedals, plus external line inputs for its mixer. Cranborne’s C.A.S.T. connection can carry four balanced analogue audio channels over a shielded Cat5 cable to compatible systems such as the 500R8, 500ADAT and N22/N22H units. The unit is half-rack width, can be desktop-mounted, and accepts an optional rackmount kit for installation in a 1U rack space.
