The Cranborne Audio Brick Lane 500 is a single-slot 500 Series analogue compressor built for engineers who need both precision dynamics control and a wide range of tonal character from one module. Its Modal PWM compression engine combines extremely fast transient response, high headroom and low distortion with six selectable operating modes, analogue lookahead, harmonic saturation and stereo-link capability.
 
Unlike a traditional compressor that is defined by one fixed circuit behaviour, Brick Lane 500 changes its internal response through six distinct modes: Velvet, Float, Smash, Tame, Glue and Polish. Each mode adjusts multiple aspects of the compressor’s behaviour, including timing, ratio, knee, detector response and gain-reduction character. This allows Brick Lane 500 to cover subtle vocal levelling, natural bass control, punchy drum compression, stereo-bus glue, aggressive room-mic processing and transparent mastering duties.
Velvet is suited to smooth and musical level control on vocals, acoustic instruments and programme material. Float delivers an open, natural compression response that retains movement and dynamics. Smash provides a more assertive character for drums, room microphones, percussion and creative processing. Tame offers firmer peak control for energetic sources that require restraint. Glue is designed for cohesive bus compression on drum buses, keyboards and stereo mixes. Polish focuses on transparent finishing, controlled peak management and high-end mix-bus or mastering work.
 
The fully analogue PWM circuit operates at 250 kHz and delivers a broad frequency response from 2 Hz to 80 kHz. With a dynamic range above 118 dB and very low distortion in its neutral settings, Brick Lane 500 can work as a clean, detailed compressor even on demanding stereo-bus and mastering material. At the same time, its Stress control adds multiband harmonic saturation to the compression process. Use Stress subtly for more density, solidity and perceived energy, or push it for a more colourful, harmonically rich effect on drums, bass, guitars, synthesizers and electronic sources.
Variable threshold, attack and release controls allow the compressor response to be adapted to the source. The selected mode shapes their practical range and feel, ensuring that each control remains useful for the chosen compression style. The Enigma function provides deeper control over the underlying compression behaviour, including aspects of detector response, knee, timing and diode-style response, giving experienced engineers further options for detailed tone shaping.
Brick Lane 500 includes an analogue lookahead circuit for exceptionally fast peak control without digital conversion. Its specified minimum attack time is 6 nanoseconds. In Polish mode with Lookahead active, the unit can provide 6 ns attack behaviour with zero processing delay at 20 kHz. This supports controlled transient management while keeping the full signal path analogue.
A selectable sidechain high-pass filter can be set to Off, 60 Hz, 100 Hz or 200 Hz. Use it to reduce unwanted pumping caused by kick drum, bass or sub-frequency energy, or disengage it when full-range detector response is desired. Separate ±20 dB input and output controls support careful gain staging, intentional drive into Stress saturation and accurate output-level matching for reliable A/B decisions.
 
Two Brick Lane 500 modules can operate as a stereo pair through Cranborne Audio OptoSync. Adjacent modules synchronize wirelessly, while a 3.5 mm TRS connection supports stereo linking when the modules are not installed next to each other. Internal auto-calibration helps maintain matched stereo behaviour, making a pair suitable for overheads, keyboards, drum bus, mix-bus and mastering processing.
 
With its combination of transparent analogue PWM compression, mode-dependent dynamics behaviour, fast lookahead, harmonic saturation and stereo flexibility, Brick Lane 500 is not simply another 500 Series compressor.
