BAE 1073MPL 500 Series Mic Preamp

The BAE 1073MPL is the 500 Series version of the 1073MP – a Class A microphone preamp based on the legendary 1073 equaliser circuit – repackaged into a compact module for API‑style racks. It delivers the same well‑known 1073‑style sound with its harmonically rich low end, slightly resonant highs and focused mids, giving you unmistakable British console tone wherever you can drop a 500‑slot into your setup.

Built around a fully Class A, transformer‑coupled signal path with Carnhill (St. Ives) input and output transformers, the 1073MPL adds depth, weight and harmonic complexity to almost any source. Two selectable input impedances, 300 Ω and 1200 Ω, let you match a wide range of dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones, or deliberately change the loading to alter tone and feel. With up to around 71 dB of gain, a frequency response reaching from 10 Hz to about 55 kHz and a maximum output level over +27 dBu, the module stays open and punchy while still sounding unmistakably coloured and musical.

On the front panel you get the familiar red Marconi gain knob, a high‑impedance DI input for guitar, bass and synth, plus switches for phantom power, phase reverse and often an EQ/line mode depending on the rack wiring. Line‑level capability means you can also use the 1073MPL as a line preamp to add analogue heft to stems, mixes or soft synths. Because it is hand‑wired using the same modular construction and Class A components as BAE’s full‑size 1073 and 1084 units, the 1073MPL feels like a genuine console channel shrunk down for 500‑Series workflows – equally at home in recording studios, broadcast rigs and high‑end live racks.
